“Three fast, unarmored flying attackers. Roses are red, minions are blue, they can fly, and will crush you!”

The Minions card is unlocked from the Training Camp (Tutorial). It spawns three single-target, short-ranged, flying Minions with low hitpoints and moderate damage. Their appearance is that of a bluish-purple gargoyle with large horns, stubby wings, and large hands with sharp vicious claws. They are the same as those spawned by the Minion Horde. A Minions card costs 3 Elixir to deploy.

Strategy[]

  • The Minions can be used to support high-hitpoint troops like Giants. They can also distract slow-targeting units like the Inferno Tower.
  • Attacking Minions with no support can be easily destroyed due to their low hitpoints. However, a trio of Minions has a very high damage capability, so if they manage to get to a Crown Tower, they will deal massive damage to it. If the player's Minions are unscathed after a defense, they can play a tank in front of them so that the opponent's Princess Tower will not target them.
    • The Miner in particular pairs well with any surviving Minions, as it can be quickly deployed in front of them and will immediately reach the Crown Tower. Even if just one Minion is still alive after a defense, tanking for it with a Miner will force the opponent to address both. It can also be played as a fast and lethal push when at an Elixir advantage or when the opponent's best counter is not in hand.
    • On a similar idea, it may be worth deploying a Freeze spell to allow the Minions to deal severe damage to the Crown Tower. This is especially punishing when the opponent is caught off-guard, for example, if they rely on a Zap to counter them. However, without the surprise factor, follow-up attempts may not be as successful.
  • When unsupported, Zap can bring their health low enough for your Princess Tower to one-shot them. For a further positive elixir trade, Skeletons or any spirit like the Ice Spirit can be played in the center to distract them long enough for the Princess Towers to deal with them. However, Minions will be one-shot from a single Zap, Fire Spirit, or Giant Snowball if they are 2 levels lower, so having them leveled as highly as possible is more important.
  • Like the Minion Horde, Minions can destroy many small units like the Bomber or Goblins with ease, and have a significantly lower risk factor compared to the Minion Horde, largely because most players are not willing to use their Arrows on Minions. The trade-off is that they have much less damage per second and might not be able to defeat certain threats fast enough.
  • The Ice Golem combined with Minions can defend against many units which do not only target buildings. When the player encounters a troop that the Minions cannot defeat alone (like a Prince), the Ice Golem can kite it and tank their attacks for a cheap cost. A Knight costs one more Elixir, but can be more reliable when defending against bigger pushes with more than one support unit.
  • The Minions (and Minion Horde) are extremely effective at destroying enemy Balloons, as the Balloon moves slowly and only targets buildings. Both of them are also air troops, and as such, the Minions are able to block the Balloon's path. On the contrary, they synergize well with the Balloon. Not only do they handle small units like Bats and Mega Minion but also their fast movement speed allows them to push the Balloon towards the Princess Tower, arriving there earlier.
  • Against air troops that target all types of units like the Baby Dragon or Mega Minion, the Minions will usually be able to neutralize them with the help of a Crown Tower. Against ranged troops, the Minions should be deployed on top of them to negate the range advantage and to avoid possible area damage value. More specifically, against the Baby Dragon, the Minions should be deployed around it to surround it. Against melee troops, the Minions should be played from a short distance to allow their deploy timer to finish.
  • Minions can also defeat the Graveyard since they can attack the spawned Skeletons quickly. However, beware of spells like Arrows and Poison.
  • Small ranged units like Archers and Spear Goblins are the most effective counter against Minions. Place them at a distance so that the Minions deal as little damage to them as possible.
  • The Wizard is able to one-shot Minions, however, he is a negative Elixir trade. He is more effective at countering the Minion Horde because of their equal Elixir cost. However, in either case, you will have an unscathed Wizard to use for a counterpush.

History[]

  • The Minions card was added with Clash Royale's soft launch on 4/1/16.
  • On 3/5/16, the May 2016 Update increased the Common card level cap to 13 (from 12). The update also fixed the "range bug", which decreased the Minions' range to 2 tiles (from 2.5 tiles) but their effective range was unchanged.
  • On 20/6/18, a Balance Update gave the Minions a new 0.15 sec deploy stagger from each other. It also moved the Arena to unlock this card from Bone Pit (Arena 2) to Training Camp.
  • On 1/7/19, a 'Rulebook' Update decreased the Minions' range 1.6 tiles (from 2 tiles), now classified as 远距离近战.
  • On 2/6/20, a Balance Update decreased the deploy stagger for each Minion to 0.1 sec (from 0.15 sec).
  • On 27/10/21, the 2021 Quarter 3 Update increased the level cap of all cards to 14 (previously 13).

Trivia[]

  • The Minion Horde's description describes 3 Minions as a crowd.
  • The Minions are 1 of 17 troops which first existed in Clash of Clans, the others being Archers, Goblins, Barbarians, Giant, Valkyrie, Wizard, Hog Rider, Witch, Bowler, P.E.K.K.A., Wall Breakers, Balloon, Golem, Lava Hound, Cannon Cart, and the Archer Queen.
  • In the description, the "Roses are red, Minions are blue" line is from the classic love poem starting "Roses are red, Violets are blue".
  • They appear to have an underbite.
  • The Minions in the card picture of the Minion are darker in skin color compared to the Minion Horde. They also appear to be wearing indigo gloves, as opposed to the pale reddish-purple gloves worn by the Minion Horde. They also seem to have team-colored eyes in battle, instead of purple eyes like on their card.
  • The Minions' "spit" seems to come out of their fists, not their mouths.
    • This is confirmed by the Clash Royale trailers Trophies and Landscaper, where the Minions seem to build up Dark Elixir from their hands and throw it at their enemies once the ball is big enough.
    • In Clash of Clans, however, they spit Dark Elixir from their mouths. This might also explain why the Minions in Clash of Clans have a noticeably longer range than those in Clash Royale.
  • The Minions are the subject of an Emote.
  • Their Star Level 3 skin resembles the Level 3 Minion from Clash of Clans.
  • In the Japanese and French language settings of the game, the Minion's name literally translates to "Gargoyle".
